Susanne was already my friend, but it's not just any friend, even a very close one, that you want to have with you during such an intimate moment as giving birth.  Yet, I knew she was exactly the right person.  Susanne is so down-to-earth, straightforward, and practical in the most empathetic way. She is neither embarrassed nor embarrassing.  It's all just natural for her.  She also understood instinctively how to be a part of this major event with me and my husband, and how to give us our own space. It all took a very long time, but she kept us cheerful and gave us confidence throughout. Shortly after the birth, when our baby girl needed treatment and I needed a further procedure,  the proud new father went with his daughter and Susanne was there to support me. Last but not least she was a great help with getting breast feeding going at a time when the midwives in the hospital had other priorities.  I don't know what we would have done without her. I am forever grateful that my friend Susanne came all the way to London to accompany us on this great adventure that is the birth of a new human being.
